Dear Linda Edwards,
General Election 2005. Representation of the people.
You will be well aware that the first past the post system of selecting the next Member
of Parliament in the coming General Election, will not necessarily be the choice of the local electorate,
unless there are only two Candidates to choose from. Even so, if there are more than two Candidates, the one
with the majority of votes cast, will not necessarily be the choice of the overall local electorate. The chosen
Candidate could not necessarily claim to represent the wishes of the majority of votes cast and this is, more
often than not,the outcome. In the last General Election it has been claimed that very few elected M.Ps. had
the majority of support from the electorate. In other words, more often than not, their representation is
dis-propprtionate in terms of the total votes cast.
Please assure me,you will not return a Candidate to Parliament as an M.P., unless they have
the overall support of the majority of the total votes cast in the coming General Election. Otherwise I consider
it pointless and meaningless in casting my vote.
Yours sincerely,
David Robson.
Subsequently the Returning Officer was unable to assure me the General
Election would be democratic so I did not use my 'Vote'.
